Jason hit the head on the nail here. Apple dosen't do it first, and that's simply it. They take previously thought feasible ideas, and package them into a sleek and market appealing product. From then on it's adding simple features; camera, new bezel, sleeker finish, and most recently, the switch to SSD's.

Great article, I enjoyed the read.

Great Article on succeeding. One point I feel that you have overlooked is the name.
Apple was already easy to say and recall and remember. They made it mean something besides a common fruit.
It may be the first thing you learned when you learned the alphabet. ["A" is for apple on picture associated primers, or pictures around your nursery or pre-school]
Even more important it is a two syllable word. [two to seven letters, with five being the sweet spot] Think Xerox, Honda, Sony, Mazda, HP, AMEX, Visa, Kia. Three and four syllable ames are also OK, but two are the easiest to say, spell and recall.

holy crap, i do the same way too often. I think it's due to my fear of: did I get the point across? That really comes down to a: I need to better recognize when someone does or doesn't get something.

Thanks David. I agree. Too many people hate on Apple because it's the in thing or it's short sighted. They're not saints either, but they are certainly doing something right.

Great article. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from Apple. Far too many people focus on Apple as being some kind of enemy when they are clearly dominating the environments that they reach their hands into.

Good call, will update. Photo is here / later on in the paragraph:
http://c1922952.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.c...

Apple obviously has the resources to launch things such as copy/paste a lot
faster than they did. Why not do it sooner? There are still enough other
things out there.

I've upgraded every iPhone since the original, but with good reason: It's
easy to trade in and break even. I've never paid for a new iPhone.

-jlb
772.801.1058
You Should Check Out JasonLBaptiste.com <http://www.JasonLBaptiste.com>

Jason: "Evolutionary “Porsche like” improvements: Look at this photo."
I think you forgot to put the photo.

I'd like to add that Apple uses it's community cult to finance the development of almost prototype releases. The first version of almost each product is barely useful for anything other than showing off to friends, being the iPad the biggest example of this. It's never in your interest to have the perfect product the first time if you know you'll have a lot of blind buyers willing to finance the evolution of the product.

The iPhone 4 is an example of a finished product (antenna issues aside), finally it has everything that it should've had 2 years ago, why? now the competition started to catch up, in the meantime they would leave very important features out (copy & paste, multitasking, front facing camera, better cameras, better screen) for a next release, giving early adopters more reasons to update.

I know the strategy works well, it's kind of the "release early, release often", but I think it's just evil to deprive users of things like copy & paste and multitasking, there was just no excuse, except they wanted to milk their customers with the next upgrades. I believe companies should be about "how the world should be".

You forget: Establish the best looks in your field. I don't like Apple products, I think the quality is shit and they are totally overpriced, but they look so seductive.
Compare the new iPhone to my Nokia n900; the Nokia has better feature set and price (IMO), but compare the looks. Man Apple is leading the field of design like almost no tech company ever did - maybe Braun in 60s.

Marco
