Facebook Lite – Direct shot at twitter?

facebooklite1 Facebook Lite Direct shot at twitter?

facebook lite full Facebook Lite Direct shot at twitter?

Looks like it’s a direct shot at twitter considering the name.  It doesn’t work yet, but will be located at lite.facebook.com.  Update: It’s gone already. Update 2: Added full screenshot  Ideas on what this could mean:

  1. This is what Facebook and Friendfeed have been casually talking about with acquisition talks accelerating things
  2. Facebook is planning on this being the twitter client / penguin FB. Moreso, Facebook may be making a Friendfeed of sorts of its own and twitter is one of many places it could post to.

Either way a friendfeed acquisition, basic search integration, and now this makes their intentions of going after Twitter clear.  The war is on…

And of course there’s already outlash with an FACEBOOK LITE SUCKS GROUP:

I think its fake and the second phase of last week's Cyber Assault..
  • It looks a lot like the mobile version.
  • It will be interesting to see this fleshed out. I don't think it will succeed nearly as much as Twitter because, more than likely, you will only be able to share with friends. The good thing about Twitter is that the conversation is completely open. What good is this service if there is no ability to search people you aren't connected with, search topics, and gain insight without actually befriending anyone?
  • Great post. FYI, I get an error message when I click on your Twitter bade. Maybe remove the "www."?
  • Ah, you've got screenshots. Nice!

I'm pro for narrowing down the facebook functionality, but I don't really know what to say about this. IMO facebook is more and more becoming a place to rage about random stuff, and Twitter is more about sharing ideas in a constructive mannor. So if this could make useless facebook users keep their whining away from Twitter, it would be great.
  • Personally I think Facebook is doing themselves a big disservice by attempting to clone Twitter and it's functionality. Facebook should have stuck to it's guns and fleshed out the social model more in their own vision than turning the ship around and going after such a small (but popular) competitor.

The parallel I see here is Microsoft and Apple. While I personally love to see MS taking Apple straight on, they would probably be better served if they stuck with improving their flagship products like Windows and Office given that Apple is such a small competitor (market-share wise).

I would have to agree completely on both points. I wonder if they know something that we don't, or if it really is just a move stemmed from fear or uncertainties. One way or another, we'll find out soon enough. Looking forward to watch things unfold!
